GOLF CART INSPECTIONS

The KY Revised Statutes were amended to allow the City of Kuttawa to permit the operation of golf carts on City streets. The City adopted Ordinance 12-08-13-03 permitting the use of golf carts on designated city streets. The purpose of this information sheet is to summarize the conditions under which golf carts may be used on those designated City streets. The ability to drive golf carts on City streets is controlled by the language in KRS 189.286. Any person wanting to drive a golf cart on authorized City streets must have it inspected by the Lyon County Sheriff's Office and obtain a permit from the City of Kuttawa.

The golf cart must: 

• Have a minimum of four wheels.
• Be designed to operate at a speed of not more than 35 miles per hour.
• Be designed to carry not more than six (6) persons, including driver.
• Have a maximum gross vehicle weight of 2,500 pounds. 
• Have a maximum rated payload capacity of 1,200 pounds.
• Triangular shaped Dayglow safety flag, no less than 7 feet from the ground
  
• Slow moving vehicle emblem per KRS 189.820 
• Meet the federal motor vehicle safety standards for low-speed vehicles set forth in 49 C.F.R., section 571.500. That section requires the following: 

Headlamps, Front and rear turn signal lamps, Tail lamps, Stop Lamps, Reflex reflectors: one red on each side as far to the rear of vehicle as practical and one red on the rear of the vehicle, An exterior mirror mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle and either an exterior mirror mounted on the passenger side or an interior mirror, Parking brake, Vehicle identification Number (VIN) meeting Federal specifications, Type 1 or Type 2 seat belt assembly installed at each seating position meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Once the golf cart passes the required inspection and you obtain your permit:
​Inspection form and proof of insurance must be carried in the golf cart at all streets. The golf cart may only be operated by a licensed driver and may be used on City streets only between sunrise and sunset. The operator must comply with all applicable traffic regulations. The golf cart can only be used on City streets with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less and it shall not be used to cross any other roadway at an intersection where the roadway being crossed has a posted speed limit greater than 35 miles per hour.
